In an experimental study, standardized bone defects were created in 25 beagle dogs and were filled with a commercially available allogenic bone graft. Three months later, a histomorphometric examination revealed that, compared to autografts, allografts demonstrated increased vascularization. Based on the results of an animal study, the authors conclude that allografts are a suitable alternative to autografts for filling calvarial defects. The animal study also demonstrated that the increase in vascularization of allografts resulted in their enhanced osteogenic ability. Thus, the authors propose that allografts be used as a part of skull reconstruction, not only for the defect margin and defect filling but also for skull vault reconstruction. In 11 patients with skull defects following removal of a benign odontogenic tumor, allografts were implanted in 12 cases. In all cases, surgical and dental procedures were performed with appropriate prophylactic precautions and the implanted allografts showed excellent viability and bony healing. This treatment produced good functional and esthetic results.Church of San Giorgio a Porta Pinciana
